Instructions to Construct a VERSACRYL Splint

A VERSACRYL splint

Each VERSACRYL Laboratory kit contains:

  • VERSACRYL Softener monomer
  • VERSACRYL Hardener monomer
  • VERSACRYL powder polymer

To obtain superior results, several different rigidities of VERSACRYL can be incorporated into a single splint, each designed to perform a different function.

  1. In a few small jars, at the same time mix the different proportions of Softener and Hardener and stir for 5 seconds each. For a splint with, for example, a hard biting surface and a softer main body, the recommended proportions for the liquids would be: 50% A and 50% B for the main body arch and 10% A and 90% B for the occlusal surface. In the instructions, the ratios are expressed in 'drops' of each liquid.

  2. For each rigidity, just before using, slowly add the VERSACRYL powder while stirring, until the consistency is light creamy (approx. 1.5 parts powder to 1 part liquid). Wait until the mixture gels and can be rolled into a wormlike shape.

  3. Two methods to construct a VERSACRYL splint:
  • Double-pack heat-cure in a flask: invest wax-up in a flask, remove wax and pack with the first rigidity, using a polyvinyl sheet. Press and re-open flask. Prepare the second mixture; cut away the area to be replaced with this different rigidity. Prime and pack the second VERSACRYL mixture. Alternatively, 2 mixtures could be packed the first time and others added afterwards in any configuration desired. Close flask, final press and process as usual.

  • Self-cure on an articulator: to construct a complete splint in 2 different rigidities, apply the first mixture directly on the model, wherever it is desired, then add the second mixture making sure the seams are properly sealed, close the articulator, accommodate the bite and reshape. Place the entire device in a pressure cooker and process as usual.
When adding to a cured splint, cut back where desired and prepare the surfaces by roughening and priming with Hardener using a brush. Apply the new mixture and seal the seams. Process under pressure as usual.

Tip: a hard splint can be cut in two or more parts and refashioned with 40 % Softener and 60 % Hardener mixture. This splint, when heated will automatically fashion itself into the bite, without much grinding.
